How to Prepare for High School Basketball Tryouts: A Complete Checklist

    Last updated: July 28, 2026
High school basketball players lined up as a coach evaluates them during tryouts in Orange County

High school basketball tryouts are usually decided in two or three days, but they are won in the months before. Coaches are not looking for the flashiest player in the gym, they are looking for the player who is ready to contribute right now and who will keep improving all season.

Here is the checklist we use with Up Your Performance (UYP) athletes in Irvine, Tustin, and across Orange County. Work through it, and you will walk into tryouts knowing exactly what you bring.

    1. The Skill Checklist Coaches Actually Evaluate

Most tryout evaluations come down to a short list of repeatable skills. Can you do these under fatigue, with a defender, in front of a whistle?

    • Layups both hands at full speed, off one foot and two feet.
    • Catch and shoot from the wings and corners with consistent footwork.
    • Free throws, ideally 7 of 10 or better on demand.
    • Two dribble moves you trust against pressure, not ten you half know.
    • Simple, accurate passing, on time and on target, out of a live dribble.
    • Defensive stance and slides that hold up for a full possession.

Depth beats variety at tryouts. A player who does six things reliably will beat out a player who does twenty things at 60 percent.

    2. Physical Benchmarks to Train Toward

Conditioning is the most common reason a capable player gets cut. Coaches see who is still competing in the last twenty minutes of day two. Build toward these before tryout week:

    • Suicides and 17s at game pace without your form falling apart.
    • Full court sprints repeated with short rest, since most tryouts run in waves.
    • Lateral quickness from defensive slide ladders and closeout drills.
    • Core and lower body strength so you can absorb contact and finish through it.

Start conditioning at least six to eight weeks out. Our HS Prep program is built exactly for this window, combining skill work with the conditioning standards high school programs expect.

    3. Learn the Program Before You Walk In

Watch your school play. Learn whether they press, how they space the floor, and what roles are open after graduation. A guard who knows the team needs a defender who can knock down a corner three has a much clearer path than one who just tries to score.

    4. Play One Role Extremely Well

Every roster has a spot for a defensive stopper, a reliable shooter, a rebounder, or a steady ball handler. Pick the role that matches your strengths and make it obvious in every drill. Coaches remember identity, not highlights.

    5. Compete on Every Rep

Sprint the lines. Dive for the loose ball. Box out even in drills where nobody else does. Effort is the one thing that requires zero talent and gets noticed on day one. This is what we mean at UYP by Developing at all cost.

    6. Train Your Mental Game

Tryouts are pressure. You will miss shots in front of the coach who decides your season. What matters is how fast you reset. Read our guide on building confidence and next-play speed to prepare the mental side before you step in the gym.

    7. Handle the Details

    • Turn in physicals and paperwork early, not the morning of.
    • Arrive twenty minutes early, warmed up and ready.
    • Bring proper shoes, reversible shirt, and water.
    • Make eye contact, learn the coaches' names, and say thank you.
    • Ask for feedback at the end of each day, then apply it the next day.

    8. The Four Week Countdown

A simple structure for the month before tryouts:

    • Week 4: Build the base. Conditioning three days, skill work four days, lift twice.
    • Week 3: Add live reps. Pickup or small sided games where mistakes cost something.
    • Week 2: Sharpen. Shooting volume, free throws daily, defensive footwork.
    • Week 1: Taper. Lighter volume, high quality reps, full sleep, hydrate.
